Cymbeline - Royal Shakespeare Company
Paul Englishby has composed the stunning score for Cymbeline for the Royal Shakespeare Company which will open on 3rd May 2023.
Cymbeline, King of Britain when Augustus Caesar was Emperor of Rome, has a daughter, Imogen, and two sons who were stolen in infancy. Cymbeline's second wife has a son, Cloten, whom Cymbeline wants Imogen to marry; but she has secretly married a commoner, Posthumus Leonatus.
Cymbeline is believed to be one of Shakespeare's final plays and is about deceit, pursuit and seduction. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s First Folio, Artistic Director Emeritus of Royal Shakespeare Company, Gregory Doran directs the last play in that miraculous volume.
"The production benefits from a gorgeous live score from composer Paul Englishby. Each of the diverse locations and factions gets it's own distinct theme - the British court is characterised with creaky strings and lilting uilleann pipes, while Roman emissaries arrive to a blaring fanfare of trumpets and rolling drums." "Great credit too is due to composer Paul Englishby, whose music floats between the ethereal and the earthy; his first song here is a comic highlight, his second tear-jerkingly tender." WarwickshireWorld
"the ever-reliable Paul Englishby's folk-infused score is both subtle and sublime." Whats On Stage
